the flu continues to spread quickly across the united states, and in new york the state is dealing with almost five times as many cases of the flu this year than last year. things are so bad, the governor has declared a public health emergency. california is one of the few states where the flu season is not as bad. hard to say, though, if you have it, right? however, the national outbreak has people scrambling to try to get vaccines. as "today in the bay's" kimberly tere reports, they're trying to make sure there's enough vaccine to go around. >> clearly, there's nothing fun about the flu. but now it's officially an epidemic.

morning. clear skies, not much wind out there right now. thank goodness we're not dealing with too much of a windchill factor this morning. for the afternoon, we should see 40s to low 50s for highs. everything will reset tonight heading into tomorrow. more freezing temperatures to start the work week tomorrow morning. right now we've got clear skies. here's the pattern responsible for the relatively more mild air up into alaska. the ridge recentered off to the west. that opened the door to all the cold canadian air to spill into southern california. when you get cold, dense air like this that settles into the bay area, you really need something to scoop it out like a shovel and move it off to the east, but we have nothing of the sort right now. so now that it is here, it's going to linger for a while. probably for the next two to three days before overnight temperatures warm up slightly by wednesday. hour by hour today, nothing but sunshine, but chilly winter sunshine around the bay area that will feel like you're up in the sierra for the afternoon. mostly in the 40s for daytime

california democrats now dominate the golden state's political offices, and nationally democrats are
7:43 am
savoring the reelection of barack obama as well as an increased majority in the u.s. senate and modest gains in the house which remains under republican control. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston gives us perspective. >> much of this change has to do with demography. the essence of the population, for some time democrats have excelled with african-americans. but in recent years, latinos, now the largest minority in california, and nationwide, have gone with the democrats. as well as asian-americans, they've gone with the democrats. take a look at the national ethnic vote in 2012. take a look at these numbers. they're overwhelming in terms of the percentages of african-americans, asian-americans, and latinos. add a ten-point advantage among women, 3-2 margin among young voters and 3-2 advantage among gays and there's not much left. >> out here in california, we
7:44 am
are more. >> good and bad, by the way. the votes were even stronger in california. not surprisingly. minorities have an even larger presence than they do in the nation. latinos account for 37% of the state versus 16% nationwide. asian americans 11% of the state versus 5% nationwide. they're participating more. ethnic voters comprised 27% of the vote in 1994. they were 40% of the vote in 2012. and almost all of them going in that one direction. >> is the reason why democrats tend to do well with, you know, ethnic minorities and social minorities? it's because they support the same causes often? >> bingo, you're absolutely right. it has to do with democrat issues, education, health care, equality, the social safety net. improved wages. and of course, immigration. they resonate with ethnic minorities. so naturally, they're going to
7:45 am
flock disproportionately to the democrats. now, in california, these groups were largely responsible for the huge democratic majorities in the legislature. here we're beginning to connect the dots. >> what do republicans have to do? because i think there are a lot of republicans that resonate with minority groups. it's just not packaged the right way. >> they're anything but doomed. they don't have to be. the republicans are in the middle of a huge battle for, let's call it the party soul. tea party republicans on the one hand, main street republicans are much more willing to compromise on issues like immigration, and proposals of the violence against women act. they need to get their house in order. they've got to go through this soul-searching time. once they do, they need to find issues that will resonate with more. maybe charter schools, maybe pregnancy prevention, maybe
7:46 am
temporary work programs for illegal immigrants. but until republicans find those messages, to reach across the ethnic aisle, democrats are going to be the party to beat. so they've got some work to do. >> perhaps they stop letting the far right dictate the agenda for the whole party. >> it's that soul-searching time. >> thank you very much, larry. nice to see you. happy new year. >> same to you. >> we haven't been together since last year. and we'll talk to you from washington. >> going back for the inauguration. it should be fun, and cold. >> thank you very much, larry. all new "meet the press" is coming up in about ten minutes. david gregory has a look at what's in store. >> good morning. on "meet the press" this morning, a discussion with general colin powell. his thoughts on president obama's nomination of chuck hagel for defense secretary and whether his past comments on israel, iran and gays could derail his nomination. plus we'll get his take on foreign policy hot spots and what challenges face the president in the upcoming second
